Nokia primary software platform for smartphones is Symbian OS which is enhanced by the S60 user interface. Only a few Symbian/S60 devices support ActiveSync right away. Nokia offers a free software "Mail for Exchange" to add EAS support to all S60 devices. This software can be obtained from the Nokia business mobility website (http://www.businesssoftware.nokia.com/mail_for_exchange_downloads.php). Please check this website for supported devices and platforms. Generally speaking, every recent E and N series device and many more are supported by this client. Please note that this guide refers to an unmodified Nokia N95 device. Many mobile operators customize the user interface of the device and add or remove applications. If you cannot find an application or setting described at this guide, please refer to the device manual or your mobile operator for assistance in setting up ActiveSync.
First, download the Mail for Exchange client to your Symbian/S60 based smartphone. Select the downloaded installation package by using the file manager.
Install the application, confirm the security and license information about the package.
After the application has been installed, it can be found at Main Menu -> Applications as "Mail for Exchange" and "Company directory". Select the "Mail for Exchange" application and start creating an EAS profile. Enter your E-Mail address used with Open-Xchange Server. If your account name contains an '@', enter the first part to the 'Username' field and enter the second part to the 'Domain' field. For example: the account 'email@example.com' becomes user: mike, domain: ox.io. If your Open-Xchange Server account does not contain an '@', enter the user name and enter 'defaultcontext' as domain.
Input your Open-Xchange Server credentials to the username and password fields. You can also define an Access Point which is used for EAS connections by default. This can be any configured mobile service or WLAN connection.
Switch to the "Connection" tab and enter the Open-Xchange Server network address, in this case, use ox.domain.com, replace domain.com with the domain name you subscribe. If your domain name not yet fully propagate, you can use 184.108.40.206 (MY) , 220.127.116.11 (SG), 18.104.22.168 (US), also configure if you want to use an encrypted connection.
At the "Sync schedule" tab, various configurations can be made to define times and dates where the device should enter different synchronization modes. For example, your device can use Push througout your working day and 30 minute polling at your free time. This saves costs, health and battery time. The option "Server wins" should be activated to avoid duplicates created with Slow-Syncs.
Select the "Calendar" tab and enable the calendar module to be synchronized. Enable the setting "Delete items on phone" to get a clean first synchronization. Please note, this will remove all calendar data which is present at the device prior to the first synchronization. Please backup.
Select the "Tasks" tab and enable the tasks module to be synchronized. The task module is integrated to the calendar module on S60 devices. Enable the setting "Delete items on phone" to get a clean first synchronization. Please note, this will remove all task data which is present at the device prior to the first synchronization. Please backup.
Select the "Contacts" tab and enable the contacts module to be synchronized. Enable the setting "Delete items on phone" to get a clean first synchronization. Please note, this will remove all contact data which is present at the device prior to the first synchronization. Please backup.
Enable the E-Mail module. This setting will create a new entry at the Messaging menu named "Mail for Exchange" which gains access to the synchronized Open-Xchange Server E-Mail account.
Save the configuration to create a new profile and switch to the Mail for Exchange main menu.
At the main menu of Mail for Exchange, all synchronization settings can be modified and synchronization can be triggered manually. It is also possible to trigger a "Full resync" which removes all items from your device and synchronizes them again with Open-Xchange Server. Please only use this funcationality if the synchronization process fails continuously.
At "Messaging" -> "Mail for Exchange", the Open-Xchange E-Mail account is integrated. It synchronizes your Inbox folder.
Tasks and appointments are shown within the Nokia calendar application. Please note that tasks are shown together with calendar entries, there is no separate task application.
Contact data is synchronized to your phones contact book.
